Saskpower Centennial Project
Centennial Wind Power ProjectSaskPower International’s wind power project, located 25 kilometres SE of Swift Current, will provide an additional 150 megawatts (MW) of wind power to Saskatchewan – that’s enough to power 64,000 homes.
When the wind turbine installation is complete in December 2005, Saskatchewan’s wind power generation capacity will have increased from 22 MW to 172 MW.
In addition to providing an environmentally friendly, made-in-Saskatchewan solution to address climate change, the Centennial Wind Power Project helps fulfill SaskPower’s mandate to meet customer needs for electricity.
The multi-million dollar economic benefits to Saskatchewan are estimated to be:
- $70 million of Saskatchewan goods and services will be used during construction;
- $19 million in provincial sales tax (PST) will be paid during construction and operations;
- $5 million in Saskatchewan capital tax will be paid during the project life;
- $6 million in land lease payments will be paid during construction and operations;
178,000 person-hours of Saskatchewan tradespeople will be used during fabrication and construction; 15-18 construction and service contracts will be awarded to Saskatchewan companies, many of these through the turbine supply and installation contractor, Vestas-Canadian Wind Technology, Inc.; and 12 new, full-time, permanent employment positions will be created for operations.
The Government of Canada will provide approximately $54 million in funding over 10-years to the project through the Wind Power Production Incentive (WPPI) program.
SaskPower, a provincial Crown corporation, is SaskPower International’s parent. All wind power generated by the Centennial Wind Power Facility will be purchased by SaskPower for the provincial electricity system.
Project significanceSaskPower International is playing a vital role in helping SaskPower balance two key commitments. The first is environmental stewardship and the second is providing a safe, reliable and affordable source of electricity for its customers.
The Centennial Wind Power Project is part of SaskPower’s Green Power Portfolio. The strategy driving the portfolio is to ensure all new electricity needs in Saskatchewan until 2010 are met with environmentally friendly power sources that do not add to greenhouse gas emissions.
The 150 MW of wind power to be generated by the Centennial Wind Power Facility will supplement the wind power supply that is already benefiting Saskatchewan. The current 22 MW generated from the Cypress Wind Power Facility (owned and operated by SaskPower) and the SunBridge Wind Power Project (a joint venture partnership of Suncor and Enbridge).
